Whiter, but not quite as smooth as Epson Ultrasmooth FA. This is my second choice paper and I use it over Epson Ultrasmooth FA when I want a whiter paper base. Its surface is less fragile than Ultrasmooth FA and it is available in smaller sizes; as such, it is my “standard” fine art paper for portfolio presentations. Being coated, it also offers a bit better shadow detail than Epson Utrasmooth FA and an image tuned for that paper will need to be modified before printing on Hanemuehle PR. I print both color and B&W images on it and use the 308 gm sheets to avoid having to un-curl the final print. This paper is coated, though it is tough to tell the front from the back if you get it reversed. A nifty trick is to wet the tip of your finger and touch a corner; the side your finger slightly sticks to is the coated side. This paper holds a lot of ink and requires some extra dry-down time before mounting behind glass.

We like Photo Rag a lot. Careful handling is needed to avoid
scuffing and white spots due to cotton dust.

- Lovely soft, smooth surface
- Decent d-max, not as good with K3 as Enhanced Matte or Velvet Fine
Art
- Very large color gamut, among the best for K3
- Doesn't hold details as well as other matte papers, so be careful
with images with tiny details
- Recommended settings for Epson K3 printers:
- RGB mode: Velvet Fine Art, 1440 dpi
- ABW mode: Velvet Fine Art, 1440 dpi, Tone: Dark
